Shawn Mendes Illuminate Toronto, Winners’ Night
“Something Big” is definitely happening at The Great Hall. To celebrate his brand-new sophomore album, Illuminate, Shawn Mendes is performing an intimate, win-your-way-in-only, homecoming concert in The Great Hall’s freshly restored Main Hall, Saturday, October 1, 2016.
Singer-songwriter and genuine teen sensation Shawn Mendes was born in Toronto and raised 45 minutes away in Pickering. Now just 18, the former high school soccer player and longboarder saw his debut album, Handwrittten, soar to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. He has supported Taylor Swift on the North American leg of her world arena tour and been named one of Time magazine’s most influential teenagers worldwide. Mendes’ fame originally grew on Vine, where his six-second, follower-driven song cover performance clips caught the attention of Island Records, which gave him a record deal. And to say this Canadian pop idol has millions of loyal social media fans, since before he was officially discovered, would actually be a huge understatement.
As he evolves from boyish sensation to full-fledged pop star on a world tour, we’re delighted to welcome Shawn, and his fans, back to The Great Hall, which he answered The Globe and Mail’s Deidre Kelly was his “favourite place to visit in Toronto,” back in June 2015.
“Where’s the Great Hall? Queen and Dovercourt. That’s where I do all my rehearsals and stuff, before shows. It’s a nice little area. There’s a good little burrito spot nearby, Fat Bastard.”
