A Modern Wedding At The Great Hall In Toronto

Allison and Stefan met the way a lot of couples meet these days: online. “After trading a few messages back and forth we met in person at the Shangri-La Lobby in Toronto,” Allison recalls. That night the two enjoyed live music, wine and began their love story.

Allison was taken completely off guard when Stefan proposed. “Stefan has a knack for meticulously planned surprises and our engagement was no exception,” she shares. The couple was vacationing at Allison’s family cottage along the shores of Lake Huron when Stefan planned a romantic dinner for two. “Which I promptly hi-jacked by inviting my sister, along with her husband and their one year old, to join us,” Allison laughs. After their guests left, the pair went for their usual beach stroll during a golden sunset. Right there in the sand Stefan dropped to one knee and proposed. “The beach is my favourite place on earth and he couldn’t have picked a better spot,” Allison says.

The aesthetic of the celebration was focused around being modern with geometric shapes. “We aren’t into the frilly florals,” Allison explains. “We wanted something fresh and sophisticated.” The geometrics were a central theme carried throughout the wedding and most prominently displayed on the wedding arch. “For our colours, we loved the idea of blending the simplicity of white and midnight blue with the warmth of copper tones,” Allison shares. For flowers they kept things simple with white, cream and green. “We love eucalyptus and placed a sprig at each place setting.”

The couple agrees their ceremony was one of the highlights of their day. “It was as magical as we imagined it would be,” Allison says. “We spent so much time labouring over every detail and it was worth it!”  They custom designed the altar, working with a plumbing supplier to create it from scratch. For the music, the couple wanted to take a unique approach while still capturing the mood of the day. “A jazz duo playing the saxophone and piano entertained our guests prior to the ceremony and provided the music for our processions down the aisle,” Allison recalls.

Stefan picked the food for the event. “Stefan’s favourite chef is Mark McEwan so he has always dreamed of a wedding catered by him,” Allison says. The chef was such a pillar of their planning that the couple ruled out venues due to them being unable to accommodate the celebrity chef. Stefan is a foodie at heart so he spent countless hours with the McEwan team to put together the celebrations stunning menu. “Four months later, our guests are still raving about how amazing the food was.”

Changing the Narrative STATE OF HERITAGE REPORT 2019

Heritage is for everyone. It should be accessible to everyone.

As one of the world’s most diverse cities, Toronto is privileged to contain numerous layers of heritage: the natural heritage of our parks and ravines, the cultural heritage showcased in our communities, the built heritage we experience daily, and the archaeological underpinnings beneath us. We must focus our collective energies on the diverse spaces, stories, and traditions on which Toronto is built to develop a community-based view and interest in heritage.

Heritage creates social cohesion.
Heritage is a positive force for economic development.
Heritage is sustainable.
